Wind stops turbines

Bruce Mounster | Hobart Mercury |

Strong winds that upset umbrellas at the Taste of Tasmania on Monday also damaged wind turbines on the Marine Board Building, Hobart Alderman Marti Zucco said.

Ald Zucco said police had told him damage to at least one blade was the reason turbines had not operated since the Monday afternoon storm.

“It is a concern. This is the second time that we have had gusts of around 100km/h and the turbines have been damaged,’’ he said.

Ald Zucco said he had seen similar turbines with cages around them to enhance safety and that he would support such measures for the Marine Board Building.

The building’s owner Robert Rockefeller was contacted for comment.
