Council approves 1,000-metre wind turbine setback

PICTOU – County councillors were given a round of applause Monday after approving a wind turbine setback of 1,000 metres.

After months of dealing with land use bylaw amendments, county councillors have voted in favour of having a 1,000 setback in place for wind turbines in rural Pictou County.

Council had originally approved an amendment this fall that called for the setback to be 1,000 metres, but if homeowners in an area agreed, the setback could be shortened to 600 metres.

This amendment was sent back to the county’s planning advisory committee after it was approved because council wanted the advisory committee to consider a new amendment that removed the 600-metre option, so the setback would have to be at least 1,000 metres.

Coun. Robert Parker said in the past that by removing the 600-metre option, there is no chance for communities to be torn apart by people arguing over how close the setback should be.
