Application for wind farm lodged

Permission is being sought for the development of a wind energy project at Ballymanus Wind Farm to erect up to 12 new turbines.

The planning approval is being sought by ABO Wind Ireland Ltd and covers the south Wicklow townlands of Roddenagh, Killaduff, Ballymanus, Preban, Ballinglen and Askakeagh.

The application includes provisions for the construction of new internal access tracks and the upgrading of existing tracks, new site entrance, underground cabling, electrical substation and associated works.

In terms of the turbines, the application outlines that each one would have an overall maximum height of up to 150 metres, comprising a tower up to 98.5 metres high to which three blades up to 51.5 metres would be attached.

The file is open for public inspection for the next four weeks at Wicklow County Council.

However, the local lobby group South Wicklow Wind Action Group, which is opposed to any such development, has raised concerns over the timing of the application.

‘The timing of the planning submission to Wicklow County Council, coming as it did precisely when everyone was very much focussed on Christmas, must cause concern as to what ABO Wind Ireland Limited’s real motive was,’ said a spokesperson for SWWAG.

‘Furthermore, if the timing of this action is an indication of how, in the event of the project being given the go-ahead, the company might intend to go about engaging with individuals and organisations in the local community to resolve issues which may arise,’ the spokesperson added.

The group confirmed that it intends to hold a public meeting in January.
