Grampound declares “enough is enough” over wind turbines

Proposals for more wind turbines in a conservation area have prompted worried neighbours to declare “enough is enough”.

Residents have formed the Conservation Grampound action group, claiming the village has “done its bit” for renewable energy with two 110-metre turbines.

Wind power firm Airvolution installed the turbines on private Garlenick estate land in October, and in return the village will receive £15,000 to fund community projects for each year of their projected 25-year lifespan. This year an extra £50,000 went towards initiatives including the community shop, which was welcomed by the community.

Now planning applications for more turbines have prompted fears the village will be swamped.

About 300 residents of Grampound With Creed Parish have signed a petition calling for no more giant turbines to be built in the village or on its outskirts.

Kathy Wells, chairman of Conservation Grampound, said: “While many people approve of renewable energy in the form of turbines, there is a growing feeling that enough is enough.

“The vast majority of the village is against more turbines sprouting up. We would say to the planners at County Hall, the people have spoken – please don’t allow more ruination of our beautiful landscape.”

Conservation Grampound claimed that of the 75 per cent of village households surveyed, 70 per cent signed the petition.

The action was prompted after a turbine was installed on the Trewithen estate despite objections from English Heritage and Probus Parish Council.

Conservation Grampound said the village was not properly consulted as the application fell within Probus parish, although the turbine is visible from the village.

Plans for a 250KW-capacity turbine at Penbetha Farm, with a £1,000 per year community fund split between Probus and Grampound, and another 110-metre Cornwall Council turbine next to the Garlenick turbines, with an associated £7,500 per annum community cash, are also to be decided.

Ann Jones, secretary of Conservation Grampound, added: “Many people feel they have been misled over the turbines. They may have agreed to the first two but now developers are jumping on the bandwagon.

“We are determined to fight these new applications. These massive turbines are mushrooming all over the landscape.”

Cornwall councillor Bob Egerton, who represents the Probus, Tregony and Grampound division, said: “It is important that, if people feel strongly in favour or against the proposals, they should submit their comments to Cornwall Council on the specific applications – a petition about turbines in general does not carry any weight in the planning process.

“The council, as the local planning authority, will consider the benefits and detriments of each application, including the cumulative impact of the proposals, before making its decisions.”

Mr Egerton was “likely” to support the proposals, adding: “Personally, I have been proud to support many renewable energy applications in this area and the electors have always known what my views are on this subject.”

The current status of wind turbines for the Grampound and the surrounding area can be viewed on Mr Egerton’s website.
