The town of Amherst is asking residents to consider changing the way they power their homes. Make no mistake green energy is more expensive than tradition fossil fuels, but it’s sustainable, local and renewable.
On average, it’ll cost you between $14 and $24 a month more, but Amherst residents can enroll in either Mass Energy’s New England Wind program. Where 100% of your electricity would be from local wind power or the New England Green Start program where your energy would be from a combination of wind, water, solar or methane gas from an anaerobic digester like at Barstow Farm in Hadley.
We asked people if the extra expense is worth it to go green.
Brook Scott of Amherst told 22News “I think that green energy is great, the problem with Amherst is that the taxes are way too expensive. I think its unfeasible that they expect a lot of people to pay that extra $20.”
Shannon Wallack told 22News “It uses the existing energy that we deal with on a day to day basis like wind and sun so we might as well cultivate that and use it to turn on the lights every day.”
For every household that enrolls and stays enrolled for 15 months, the town of Amherst will get $40 to be used for energy efficient programs.
