Parkhurst turbine plans rejected by Isle of Wight Council

Wind turbine plans for Ministry of Justice land near Parkhurst Forest have been refused by Isle of Wight Council planners today (Tuesday).

The Isle of Wight Council planning committee rejected an application for two 125-metre (to blade tip) wind turbines.

The committee followed officer recommendation in refusing the plans, lodged by Partnerships for Renewables, on the grounds of noise to nearby homes and visual impact on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Campaign group The Wight Against Rural Turbines (THWART) welcomed the decision.

Chairman Malcolm Peplow said: “ThWART will continue to fight against any further plans to build giant wind turbines at inappropriate locations on the Island.”

The plans, which had attracted hundreds of objections, were refused by five votes to four.

Committee chairman Cllr Julia Baker-Smith had opposed the proposal but voted against the officer recommendation.

She believed the visual impact on nearby homes was more significant and should have been included in the reasons for refusal.
