“One turbine too many”

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council Strategic Planning Committee has unanimously refused an application by Yorkshire Water to build a 55 meter high wind turbine on its site at Haisthorpe.

The scheme was rejected on the grounds of the cumulative effect another turbine would have on the country landscape and the damage the turbine would do to the Heritage Assets in the area.

The application attracted a number of letters, including from the Parish Councils of Burton Agnes and Carnaby, all requesting the application be refused.

Detractors said the turbine would have been twice as tall as Flamborough Lighthouse which has a tower height of 26.5 metres.

Two ERYC ward Councillors, Jane Evison and Jonathan Owen, also spoke at the meeting in support of local opposition.

Councillor Evison said: “ here was no doubt in my mind that this application should be refused, the turbine is not small and is on an elevated site which would make it clearly visible and would have a detrimental impact on local attractions such as Haisthorpe Hall, Burton Agnes Hall and the Wolds Way.

“The area we are talking about relies heavily upon tourism and even now everywhere you look there are wind turbines to be seen, there are a number of windfarms in existence with even more that have gained planning approval.

“We have reached saturation point and must start thinking about protecting our Heritage.

“I am very pleased with the outcome and hope that if the applicant goes to appeal the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Planning Committee decision will be upheld.”

Councillor Owen said: “As one of the Ward Members I am very aware of the opposition there is to this application which I believe is justified.

“Tourism is an important issue to consider when judging the application but so is the quality of life of residents and I believe refusal is the right decision.

“Each planning application is judged and considered on its own merits and the Planning Committee members were all agreed that this was one wind turbine too many.”
