Kemptown wind farm gets OK, conditions

A three-turbine Colchester County wind project has received provincial environmental approval, with conditions, for a second time.

Environment Minister Randy Delorey approved the revamped Kemptown wind farm Wednesday. The 4.99-megawatt project is being developed by Affinity Wind LP.

Affinity is controlled by the Nova Scotia SPCA, which qualifies for the province’s community feed-in tariff program on electricity. Pictou County wind developer Reuben Burge is working with the non-profit on the project and is Affinity’s president.

The conditions include having a bird- and bat-monitoring program in place, and conducting a wetland boundary study.

The wind farm had received the environmental nod in February, but the project was moved four kilometres north. Turbines will now be on a site with a higher elevation, larger land area, no wetlands and more existing roads, Affinity has said. The wind farm will sell electricity to Nova Scotia Power at a fixed rate under a long-term contract.
