Turbine could harm view of St Mary’s

A 76.5m tip-height wind turbine is likely to be sited beside the A17 at Long Sutton although there are warnings it could harm the view of St Mary’s Church and affect residents through flicker at certain times of the year.

The Little Sutton Energy Company plan is recommended for approval by South Holland District Council’s planning officers and councillors will give their verdict on Wednesday.

A report to the planning committee says: “English Heritage considers that the proposed turbine would cause some harm to the setting and significance of St Mary’s Church.”

But the heritage body says the turbine will not “compete with the spire as a tall structure” and the harm caused to St Mary’s “should be weighed against the public benefits of the proposal”.

District councillor Chris Brewis says the turbine could impact on properties in Wisbech Road and especially on those in Bridge Road, Little Sutton. He’s concerned about flicker during spring and autumn when the sun rises and sets.

Council officers say councillors should strike a balance between the positive benefits of renewable energy and the harmful impacts of the scheme.
