Damage found at Eastern Kings wind turbine

An investigation into a damaged wind turbine blade at the Eastern Kings Wind Farm is still underway, says head of external communications for the company who makes the turbines.

Adam Serchuk of Vestas said the damaged blade was discovered on Nov. 3.

It’s a rare occurrence for a blade to be damaged, said Serchuk.

Serchuk wasn’t prepared to speculate on the estimated cost or the possible repair time until the investigation was completed.

The wind farm is owned and operated by P.E.I. Energy Corporation and consists of 10 Vestas V-90 turbines.

A spokesperson with the province’s Department of Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs said in an email the investigation into the cause would determine who would cover the cost.

“If theP.E.I. Energy Corporation is responsible for costs, the corporation has equipment and insurance in place to limit any financial impact.”

The other nine turbines will continue to operate as steps are taken to replace the damaged blade and get the turbine back online as soon as possible, said the spokesperson.

“There will be no impact on customers as a result of this incident.”
