Plans for giant wind turbine refused

Plans to install a giant wind turbine near Aberaeron have been refused by county councillors.

The county council’s development control committee rejected plans to install the 77-metre high, 500KW turbine on land in the village of Henfynyw.

A large number of people attended last week’s meeting to hear the committee vote unanimously in favour of going with the recommendation of a site inspection panel and refusing the application.

Cllr Lyndon Lloyd, a member of the inspection panel, said they had to think “very, very carefully” before making their recommendations.

He said: “We were required to look at two matters; how this application is going to affect residential amenity in the area and how it is going to affect the landscape,” he said.

“We measured this up very, very carefully and, as a committee, we unanimously decided to recommend that we turn this down.”

Cllr Lloyd went on to explain how the panel had reached their decision: “The feeling we had was that this turbine did not fit into this landscape.

“It will be visible for miles around and it would have a negative effect on the quality of life of those living close to it.”

The plans were also recommended for refusal by officers before last month’s meeting and Cllr Gethin James, who went to inspect the site, agreed this application should not be allowed.

“The main consideration when looking to refuse is will they cause significant harm to the landscape,” he pointed out.

“A turbine of this size in this location will have a significant impact on residential amenity for neighbouring properties.“It is up to us to make sure applications like this do not move forward.”

The committee voted unanimously to refuse the application, a decision which was met by warm applause from protestors in attendance

A site inspection panel will visit the proposed site for a wind turbine near Cardigan, it was decided last week.
