Almost 180 object to wind mast appeal

Almost 180 objections have been lodged against an appeal for a wind farm which would be visible by many residents across Wigtown Bay.

The mast, set for land on Kirkdale Hill, Carsluith was a precursor to the planned seven-turbine California Wind Park on the site which caused uproar across the area.

The council believed the land was too important, having been designated a Regional Scenic Area, and refused the application by Ecotricity (Next Generation Ltd) in August.

But the company lodged an appeal to Scottish ministers, which has also been met with mass opposition – much of which is from residents of Wigtown, who would be in direct line of sight of any wind farm on the hill.

One objector wrote in his submission: “It is an unfortunate coincidence that the person who stands to benefit the most financially from this plan will be not have his own view ruined by it. The much smaller mast that has already been erected near the proposed site has already gained a reputation as a local eyesore on this side of Wigtown Bay.”

Another wrote: “In short, this construction would be a blatant act of vandalism and set a worrying precedence in one of the few remaining unspoilt vistas in Dumfries and Galloway.”

The appeal target date for decision in 1 January, and ministers will carry out a site inspection beforehand.
