No funding for wind challenge

(Huron County) – A request for financial backing to challenge the province’s wind turbine approval process was blown away by Huron County Council.

The group “Concerned Citizens of Huron County” approached council Wednesday for financial backing to challenge that the turbine approval process violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Members opted not to finance one side of a two-sided issue using taxpayer dollars.

Anita Frayne spoke on behalf of the concerned citizens group, telling County councillors the financial support would lend credibility to it’s call for a moratorium on wind development until the health implications are known.

Councillor Bernie MacLellan says a definitive health study on the effects of wind turbines has not been released, and council cannot be expected to make a decision without that information.

Health Canada is expected to release a report of the health effects of wind turbines before the end of 2014.

Frayne worries turbine developers are given opposite treatment to other industries, who are asked to prove their products are safe before they are developed, rather than after.

Council was also asked to provide public support for the citizens group’s charter challenge, but a decision was not made during Wednesday’s meeting.

MacLellan agrees citizens opposed to wind turbines were wronged by the province’s Green Energy Act, but says those who accepted wind energy on their properties acted in accordance with the law.

He says their rights, profits, and tax dollars should be protected.

MacLellan adds, council cannot be expected to draw the same conclusions as turbine opponents when information exists backing both sides.
