Turbine plan rejected

Plans to build a giant wind turbine in Ellesmere have been refused after almost 200 objection comments were received.

Planning officers deemed the 327ft wind turbine to be unsuitable for the area on the grounds that it would have a detrimental impact on the countryside, outweighing any potential benefits.

The refusal will no doubt be celebrated by the hundreds of worried residents who strongly objected to the proposal believing it would be a distraction to motorists and ruin the landscape.

Green energy supporter and Ellesmere Town Councillor, Ian Ward has previously explained that although he is clean energy advocate, it should not be a cause of potential damage to the infrastructure or environment of the local area.

He spoke of his delight that the application had been refused but said he was also a little apprehensive.

“Obviously I’m pleased it has been rejected. It was an important decision, baring in mind its position to nearby proposed developments,” he said. “It’s a sensitive area with the canal and the visitors it attracts. I’m relieved it’s been rejected but I’m also apprehensive that it will go to appeal. But it’s early days and all I can say is that it’s the right decision for Ellesmere.”

The application, which was submitted in April by Seven Sisters, claimed the proposal would have significant benefits for the local and wider community as the scheme would produce energy to contribute towards local targets for renewable energy. It is estimated that the proposed wind turbine could generate 1,400 MWh per year which is enough to power 280 homes per year.

The applicant now has 28 days to appeal against the decision.
