Wind farm firm may axe projects if Renewable Energy Target cut goes ahead

The company behind plans for several western Victorian wind farms says it is likely to scrap the projects if proposed changes to the Renewable Energy Target are passed.

Last week, the Federal Government announced its intention to slash the target from 41,000 gigawatt hours to 26,000 but still needs to gain crossbench support for the cut.

Renewable Energy Systems wants to build wind farms at Ararat, Murra Warra and Penshurst.

However, the company’s head of development, Annette Deveson, said the company could end up leaving Australia altogether.

“That’s not beyond the realms of possibility and I think this kind of impact is also there and very real for many renewable energy companies across Australia,” she said.

“We’re going through now what is effectively a significant industry review.

“The Government’s proposing the level of cut to the target which is likely to really decimate the industry.

“That effectively means a cut of around 64 per cent to the renewable energy industry as a whole and we think the chances of getting those projects through into development and into construction will be extremely slim.”
