There’s no cause yet, for a fire at the Fenner Wind Farm on Friday night.

Madison County 911 tells us fire volunteers were called before midnight, and the Madison County Fire Departments Facebook page says firefighters did not get close for fear the massive tower would collapse on them. Morrisville and Smithfield fire volunteers responded to the fire.

The fire, reported about 11pm, was in the turbine atop the tower, and also scorched the unit’s fiberglass blades. As small as it may look from the ground, the nacelle complex that attaches to the blades, at the top of the tower, is the size of a school bus.

The wind farm’s owners, Enel Green Energy, based in Andover, Massachusetts, confirms there were no injuries, and that they are looking for the cause. A company spokesman says there’s a team already on site, investigating, and, while there’s no immediate threat after the fire, that people keep a safe distance from the turbine as the repairs are made.
