Campaigners celebrate successful rejection of Pilrow wind farm bid

Residents living near the site of a controversial proposed wind farm near Burnham-On-Sea have celebrated the end of a successful three-year campaign.

Broadview Energy first unveiled in 2011 its plans to build four 130-metre tall wind turbines on land at Pilrow Farm in Rooksbridge.

Earlier this year, the Secretary Of State Eric Pickles said the wind turbines would cause substantial harm to the landscape and this outweighed the need for renewable energy.

Broadview’s appeals against the planning refusals from Sedgemoor District Council and the Planning Inspectorate were dismissed and the developer did not call for a judicial review to challenge the decision.

Members of the NoPilrow group and supporters gathered for a celebration in Rooksbridge to mark the end of a successful, but long campaign.

David James from the NoPilrow group, said: “We got the right result in the end, but it did involve a great deal of work and time. We’ve all learned a lot from the last few years and hope we don’t have to go through it again. We do very much thank all those who supported us.”

Martin Keegan added: “We were opposing some of the best specialists in the business, so it did require a huge amount of work on research and ensuring we had a solid argument against the proposals. Needless to say, we are delighted to have won!”
