The Rush County Commissioners met Monday and were faced with a brief agenda of items requiring their attention.

Prior to hosting a public meeting on a proposal by those in support of making the Rushville City Library a county library, the county leaders heard from ECDC director John McCane.

McCane announced that a county wide public meeting regarding wind energy will be held beginning at 6 p.m., Oct. 28 at Center Christian Church. According to McCane, the question and answer session will be regarding the possibility of wind energy turbines being placed in the county.

In other matters, county highway superintendent Jerry Sitton revisited the issues of lowering the weight limit on three of the county’s five remaining covered bridges. As a result of Monday’s action, the First Covered Bridge located east of CR 150E on CR 150N joins the Offutt Covered Bridge as the county’s two bridges with weight limits set at three tons. The county’s other covered bridges: Forsyth Covered Bridge – CR 600S, Moscow Covered Bridge – CR 600W and the Second Covered Bridge located on CR 300N each have 10 ton weight limits.

“From what we have seen (damage wise) on the First Covered Bridge, I recommend that we consider reducing the weight limit on the other bridges as well,” Sitton said.

The commissioners were in agreement and will revisit the matter during an upcoming meeting.

“I feel the covered bridges are worth preserving for our county. It is part of Rush County’s heritage. In light of the engineer’s recommendation to reduce the weight on the First Covered Bridge, I for one am in favor of reducing the weight on the other bridges as well,” commissioner Bruce Levi said.

In other matters, the county leaders announced the EMS run activity during September for emergency medical responders. During the previous month, Raleigh Fire Department made four medical runs, Anderson Township seven, Carthage 10 and Rush Memorial Hospital 70 – 33 of which were E911 calls, 11 transfers to other medical facilities and 23 non- emergency runs.
