Lack of transmission lines stands in the way of wind power

The company preparing to build the first commercial wind farm in Connecticut says its Colebrook-based project may pave the way for similar projects statewide, but a larger issue looms before wind can make a significant impact on the state’s and the New England region’s demand for energy: the need for more transmission lines.

The amount of wind resources has been growing in recent years, and there is the potential for more, according to Lacey Girard, a spokesman for ISO-New England, the nonprofit organization that operates the region’s power grid. The Colebrook project will feed that grid.
