Tipp County Council to review wind energy strategy

Tipperary County councillors have voted to review the wind energy strategy for the whole county in light of protests regarding wind turbines.

A motion had been put forward by several councillors to have the area around Curraghdobbin and Carrigadoon Hills near Carrick zoned as unsuitable for wind energy.

Members of Ahenny Action Group, Faugheen Against Pylons and the Ballyneale Environmental Action Group were all in attendance at the County Council meeting on Monday in Clonmel.

Although no planning application had been lodged for such a development, it is believed that such an application is expected.

Several councillors echoed protesters from the mentioned areas who were concerned wind turbines would ruin the national landscape, dislodge water tables and be abandoned once they were no longer profitable. Independent councillor Kieran Bourke said ‘’This area is visible from 3 counties – Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford. I truly believe that wind turbines would disturb the area’’.

Fianna Fail cllr Imelda Goldsboro said the issue of wind turbines had caused many problems for the local residents.The members voted 16 /13 to review the wind energy strategy in the county.

Currently a national target of 20 percent for renewable energy by 2020 is set. Ms Reidy stated that no such percentage is required of each individual county.
