The government of Quebec has issued a decree to allow construction of the 150MW Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n wind farm in the Gaspé Peninsula.

Innergex, which will manage the construction and operation of the wind farm, is a 50-50 partner in its project company with the Mi’gmaq communities of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj.

“Innergex and its partner, the Mi’gmaq communities of Quebec, have reached an important milestone in the development of this wind project and we look forward to beginning pre-construction activities soon,” said Innergex president Michel Letellier.

“This project enjoys a very high degree of social acceptability, is being developed in compliance with environmental requirements, and will provide substantial economic benefits for our partners and value for our shareholders.”

The wind farm will be sited on public lands in the Avignon Regional County Municipality and the partners expect to begin pre-construction activities such as wood clearing in late 2014 with construction starting in 2015.

Commercial operation is targeted at the end of 2016. The cost of the project is currently estimated at $365m and once operational its output will be covered by a 20-year fixed-price power purchase agreement with Hydro-Québec.
