Either simple vandals or wind-turbine opponents are targeting machinery at turbine sites throughout Huron County, OPP say.

An excavator parked at a wind turbine site on Bridge Rd. in Huron East overnight Oct. 9 sustained thousands of dollars in damage after its were windows smashed and computer controls destroyed, police said.

The suspects also destroyed all of the paint markings on the ground that marked out where the operator needed to dig.

A similar occurrence took place in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Sept. 21, police said. Someone hurled rocks through the windows of two excavators on Glen’s Hill Rd. causing $10,000 in damage.

On Sept. 13, Huron County OPP officers investigated $13,000 in damages to a port a potty and light stand generator on a Cransford Line wind turbine site.

Mischief to property is a criminal offence that carries significant penalties upon conviction, up to and including imprisonment for 10 years, Huron OPP said. They’d like to hear from anyone who sees suspicious-looking vehicles or people on turbine sites late at night or early morning.
