Portsmouth sees wind power deal for school turbine

AP | Oct 15, 2014 | www.abc6.com

Portsmouth is looking to make a deal with a wind power company to install a wind turbine to replace one that has stood idle at Portsmouth High School.

The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) that the Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to accept a proposal from Wind Energy Development LLC, in which the North Kingstown firm agreed to replace the turbine towering over the high school and replace it with a new 1.5-megawatt turbine.

Wind Energy Development would agree to pay $2 million to the town over seven years and the town could pay $2 million it owes from a 2007 bond voters approved to promote green energy.

The town would agree to buy energy for town buildings, excluding schools, from Wind Energy Development for at least 15.5 cents per kilowatt hour.
