Livingston Co prepares for wind turbine hearings

PONTIAC – The Livingston County Ag and Zoning Commission took its first look at a controversial issue on Tuesday.

The commission discussed the possibility of adding 148 wind turbines to southern Livingston County. Community members came out to hear the possibilities being discussed about the structures that could soon be in their back yards. It will be up to the Zoning Board of Appeals to listen to arguments and then recommend to the county board how many turbines can go up

“They’ll be some that are very opposed to wind farms, especially the one that’s proposed in Pleasant Ridge,” said Bob Young, chairman of the Ag & Zoning Committee. “There’ll be other people that’ll come with expert testimony on both sides that’ll be very much in favor of it.”

“The major concern is environmental,” said Rick Miller, a resident of Forrest. “I don’t like to see them and there’s a tremendous amount of resources used in constructing these.”

Although no action was taken Tuesday, public hearing dates were set. The first one will be at Pontiac High School on Nov. 17, starting at 6 p.m.
