Campaigners’ fears realised as wind turbine plans are re-submitted

Plans to erect two 75m high wind turbines in Stretham have been re-submitted despite a growing chorus of criticism from residents.

Farmer Chris Attle applied to East Cambridgeshire District Council in July for permission to erect the two turbines on Red Hill Farm, in Cambridge Road, an arable and beef farm.

But, just weeks after submitting the plans, Mr Attle withdrew them, citing a “problem with the grid connection”.

Some two months on, however, and the problems appear to have been rectified and Mr Attle is once more pressing ahead – despite opposition from neighbours.

The blades of the two turbines will stretch to some 54m in diameter and, at maximum capacity, the turbines will be capable of generating enough power for hundreds of homes.

In the submission, agents acting for Mr Attle said: “While the tower will be very visible in the flat landscape it would be equally visible were the tower to be slightly smaller.

“As there will only be two turbines and the land around the proposed site is all arable we do not envisage there will be any significant impact on the immediate landscape, and any slight impact that might occur would be outweighed by the benefits of the proposal.”

In response to the plans, campaign group Stop Stretham Wind Farm has been established and meets regularly to discuss the potential impact of the plans on the village.
