Banks Renewables has been refused planning permission to keep a met mast at the site of its shelved Killington wind project in south Cumbria.

The developer said it is now weighing its options following the decision by South Lakeland District Council, which went against a recommendation for approval from planning officers.

The 80-metre unit was erected in 2012 as part of studies for the three-turbine scheme, which was to be sited on land to the south of the A684 Sedbergh Road.

Killington was approved by South Lakeland District Council in January but Banks decided to withdraw it last month ahead of a public enquiry after the application was called in for determination by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles.

Banks applied for permission to leave the test mast in place in July, saying it wanted to gather further wind data with a view to a revised wind farm design for the location.

Development director Phil Dyke said: “We were disappointed to be forced to withdraw the original Killington wind farm proposal.

“We’re still considering our options for future alternative schemes that might be suitable at this site and leaving the test mast in place would allow us to gather further wind data for use in the design of any future proposals that we decide to bring forward.

“We will examine the precise reasons for this judgment before deciding upon the most suitable next course of action.”
