Final City Council vote on Southside annexation delayed

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) – The City Council vote regarding the proposed annexation of land in the Chapman Ranch area was scheduled to take place Tuesday, but instead it was pushed back to Oct. 14.

For the first time, council heard from a former commander at Naval Air Station-Kingsville about the impact of the proposed wind farm, which the City is hoping to prevent by annexing the property where it will be located.

Captain Mark McLaughlin is a consultant with the Department of Defense, and he appeared during public comment at Tuesday’s council meeting, where they had planned a final vote on the southside annexation. McLaughlin said the base had problems with many of the current wind farms in the area, and he thinks the Chapman Ranch wind farm would create even more problems for air traffic controllers in the Coastal Bend.

“Where APEX plans to build is not conducive to the radars at Kingsville or Corpus International,” McLaughlin said. “And it’s certainly not conducive for future growth of where the city plans to grow to in the future.”

The vote, which would have taken place at Tuesday’s meeting, was delayed because Mayor Nelda Martinez was being installed as president of the Texas Municipal League in Houston. Mayor Pro-Tem Rudy Garza said it is in everyone’s best interest to have the mayor present for a final vote.

Councilman David Loeb was also absent because of the recent birth of his daughter.
