A sign of the times for wind farm protesters

Protesters against the erection of 21 new wind turbines on Llanllwni Mountain have now erected their own sign – thanking the county council.

Chairman of the anti-wind turbine group, and owner of the Talardd Arms pub in Llanllwni, John Jones has spoken of his relief since the plans were binned and why the campaign group has taken the step of thanking Carmarthenshire Council.

Mr Jones said:”What we didn’t want to happen was to split the community in half, we wanted to keep the situation professional.

“What ever the outcome, we in the community still had to live together and that is what was important.

“We want to live in a village that’s united.”

RES UK and Ireland’s plans for the 127-metre turbines were initially refused by Carmarthenshire Council.

After appealing to the Welsh Assembly government, the plans were turned down in May this year, due to concerns over its effects on the surrounding communities and wildlife. To show his appreciation to Carmarthenshire Council, Mr Jones planted a thank you sign outside his house on Llanllwni Mountain.

Mr Jones added: “The group still exists and we will be keeping an eye on any future plans for new wind turbines in our area.”

Jonathan Edwards MP said at the time of the decision: “This is great day for local democracy and a testament to the hard work of local campaigners and Councillor Linda Evans who have co-ordinated a strong, united campaign to protect this wonderful asset.”
