Upper Hunter Council wants conditions imposed on wind farm development

Upper Hunter Shire Council has called on the NSW Government to impose a number of conditions on a proposed billion dollar wind farm near Cassilis.

The environmental assessment for the Liverpool Range Wind Farm is on public display.

Around 60 of the 290 turbines would be located in the Upper Hunter shire.

Mayor Michael Johnsen said there are three main issues that the council wants addressed.

“Council is recommending a number of conditions of consent that include that the developer contribute to a Community Enhancement Fund, also upgrade and maintain local roads that maybe affected by the project pre-and-post construction and on an ongoing basis,” he said.

“And, also to ensure that during the construction phase and ongoing that there’s a housing strategy to accommodate the workers.”

The Upper Hunter Shire Council is predicting a population boom during construction of the wind farm.

Councillor Johnsen said over 800 people will be needed to build it and 80 workers will stay when it is operating.

He said a lack of homes in Merriwa and Cassilis could be a concern.

“”We want them to be part of the community and contribute to the community in whatever way,” he said.

“Whether it’s being through social activities or community activities, basically be a part of the community.

“We’re a very attractive and welcoming community and I’m sure that anyone who comes to the area for work on this particular project will enjoy their lifestyle.”
