Nova Scotia Power gets Sable Wind approval

A six-turbine wind project in Guysborough County has cleared its final regulatory hurdle.

The provincial Utility and Review Board approved Nova Scotia Power’s $15-million share of Sable Wind on Monday.

A Nova Scotia Power spokeswoman said the company was pleased with the board’s decision.

“The wind project will be an important contributor to the local economy, as well as providing clean energy generation for Nova Scotia,” Neera Ritcey said.

The utility company holds a 49 per cent interest in the 13.8-megawatt venture, which is majority owned by the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.

Warden Vernon Pitts said the municipality, working with Nova Scotia Power, did its due diligence on the project so it would get board approval.

“It shows us that it’s a great project for our residents,” Pitts said.

Construction of the $27-million wind farm is slated to be completed by mid-December so the project can be producing power by the new year.

Roads to the Canso-area site are almost complete and some turbine foundations have been finished.

Pitts said some of the turbines are being assembled on site now and will be erected early next month.

“The cranes and the boom trucks are there ready to go.”

Most of the 20 or more workers on site each day are from the local area, he said.

Nova Scotia Power asked the board in May to approve the capital project, which ratepayers will fund.
