EAST GREENWICH—At last Monday’s regular meeting, the East Greenwich Town Council delved further into defining the town’s desire and capabilities for allowing wind turbine development. Planning Director Lisa Bourbonnais gave the council an overview of the board’s overall findings, as well as a first draft of a tentative ordinance to permit limited wind turbine construction in town.
Bourbonnais first outlined the motivation towards developing an ordinance for potential wind turbine construction in East Greenwich, noting that state efforts to ‘incentivize’ such activities prompted the town to take a look.
“Back in 2013, some of the state legislation that was proposed was intended to make wind turbines a use permitted by right in certain zones, and that was when East Greenwich realized it didn’t have an regulatory framework,” she said. “The council imposed a moratorium that lasted a year long to study the issue.”
