City votes to annex Chapman Ranch

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Corpus Christi City Council took a major step forward towards blocking construction of a wind farm in the Chapman Ranch area.

They voted today to annex the 16 square mile piece of land.

All voted in favor of annexation, with the exception of Chad Magill, who abstained from voting.

Today’s vote, paves the way for the city to block plans for a wind farm proposed by Apex.

But, the move is not final yet, the annexation plan still has to pass a second vote.

Annexing the land would give the city control and a say over what can be built in the Chapman Ranch area.

The city says a wind farm could come right up to our city limits and hurt growth on the southside.

But since that annexation would make the city responsible for taking care of the 16 square mile piece of land, those opposed to annexation say the city already has a hard time taking care of it’s streets and citizens now and they argue that the city can’t possibly add and maintain more.

Apex wind farm has been negotiating with the city hoping to stop the annexation. They’ve even offered to shrink the project. They did not return calls we made today for comment, though.

The city has not set their next date for the second reading, but that would make the city’s deal final.
