Krishna coastline set to be hub for wind power

A year after analysis of all the necessary wind parameters recorded at ‘Wind Monitoring Station’ at Sorlagondi village in Krishna district, the Centre for Wind Energy Technologies (CWET) has realised the potential to set up wind power projects here, sources told The Hindu.

The CWET, a research and development institution of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in collaboration with Non-conventional Energy Development Corporation of AP (NEDCAP), has set up the station in August 2013.

“The CWET is likely to put the complete data on recorded wind speed, direction, temperature and humidity levels in the public domain by November end. It will also share the data with companies that are interested in setting up wind power projects along the coastline,” NEDCAP Krishna District Manager K. Srinivasa Rao told The Hindu.

As many as 15 multinational companies including giants in wind power production have reportedly willingness to set up wind power projects at Sorlagondi. The interested companies, according to NEDCAP sources, were including the Suzlon , the world’s fifth wind turbine supplier. “We, CWET and NEDCAP, are just facilitators of standard and authentic scientific information that is helpful for the companies engaged in wind power field,” said Mr. Srinivasa Rao. The data was being collected on hourly basis at the 100-feet station and co-related with Indian Meteorological Department.

The CWET has chosen the location along the coastline in Diviseema area Krishna district for setting up the wind monitoring station following their detailed scientific study on the wind parameters.

The maintenance authority, NEDCAP, has confirmed that there was no technical barrier to maintain the station during all seasons. While key locations along the coastline between Srikakulam and Nellore have been proposed for production of coal-based thermal power and nuclear power in Andhra Pradesh, the CWET has set up the station to encourage tapping of the wind energy source, an eco-friendly initiation.
