Company planning wind farm in Gage, Lancaster counties

An energy company has filed a formal application to build part of a wind farm in northern Gage County. Volkswind U.S. would construct the generation facility in parts of Gage and Lancaster Counties.

Gage County Zoning Administrator Nancy Niedfeldt says the company filed an application for a special use permit, on Wednesday.

Over 30 wind turbines would be built by Volkswind in southern Lancaster County. If approved, Volkswind would become the second company to build wind turbines and operate a generating facility in Gage County. Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources built the Steele Flats wind farm now operating in southeast Jefferson and southwest Gage County.

A Volkswind permit was previously approved by Jefferson County Commissioners for a 45 turbine wind generation farm between Jansen and Harbine along U.S. Highway 136.

According to the Volkswind U.S. website, the company has another wind farm proposal under development in east-central Nebraska. The Gage and Lancaster County project is likely to come before the Gage County Planning Commission at a November meeting. Volkswind operates several wind farms in Europe and has four under development in the United States. The company’s U.S. headquarters is in Portland, Oregon.
