Highland Council has refused planning permission for a 14-turbine wind farm about five miles (8km) south west of Ben Wyvis, a Munro in Ross-shire.
Developer PI Renewables wants to build the farm on the slopes of Carn Gorm, a hill near the mountain.
The Mountaineering Council of Scotland and John Muir Trust opposed the project.
Council planning officials said the scheme would have a detrimental impact on a scenic landscape.
PI Renewables said its wind farm would contribute to the environmental and economic sustainability of the Highlands.
It can appeal to the Scottish government against the local authority’s decision.
