Streator wind permits lapse amid lack of interest

STREATOR – A special use permit for a 100-tower wind farm in Otter Creek and Allen townships in LaSalle County has expired, although a buyer for the project is still being sought.

Five years ago, Iberdrola, an East Coast energy company, applied for and received a special use permit to erect the towers.

Mike Harsted, LaSalle County director of environmental services, said it has been several years since anyone has expressed an interest in putting wind towers in the county, though projects are on the upswing elsewhere in Illinois.

Electrical power from wind farms in the state climbed 8.2 percent in one year, according to U S. Energy Administration.

The two existing wind farms in the county are at least five years old.

Invenergy is planning a project with 136 turbines in Livingston County.

About 5 percent of Illinois energy is produced through wind turbines, according to the federal government.
