Council approves first reading of bylaw for 1,000-metre wind tower setback

Pictou County Council has approved the first reading of an amendment to the wind energy bylaw.

Councillors voted in favour of the amendment, with the exception of one nay vote, to see wind turbines set back from residences increased to 1,000 metres. However, this setback could be reduced to 600 metres if all of the residents within the area of the new wind tower agree.

The bylaw amendment has been a hot topic for councillors with many county residents making it known they want the setback to be 1,500 metres. The second and third readings of the bylaw change will take during a public meeting on Sept. 29 at a location yet to be determined.

County Warden Ron Baillie said people interested in speaking at the meeting should notify the county office. Each speaker will be given 10 minutes to state their case, but councillors will not be speaking because it is an information session only for them.

He said council is expected to debate the issue during an October meeting.
