Councilor seeks update on South Terminal

NEW BEDFORD – The City Council has requested an update on the South Terminal project.

Indicating that he’s interested in who will run the terminal and whether it will be utilized for offshore wind staging or for other uses, Councilor-at-large David Alves has asked that the council be allowed to tour the site.

“I want an opportunity for city councilors to walk the turf, see the site and get an explanation of how and why it’s getting built,” he said. “City councilors are advocates for the city, and we get questions a lot. Not every inquiry goes to the mayor; many of us get questions and I’d like to know more about it.”

MassCEC Spokesman Matt Kakley said earlier this month in a statement Monday that the organization has “always envisioned the terminal as a multi-use facility” and that MassCEC will “continue to work closely with our partners in the community and in government to ensure this large infrastructure investment will benefit the economies of New Bedford, the SouthCoast and the commonwealth as a whole for years to come.”

Alves said he wants to know if the offshore wind turbine staging would affect the potential locating of a casino by developer KG Urban at the former NStar building at Cannon Street.

The council voted Thursday to send discussion of the potential site visit to the Committee on Appointments and Briefings, which Alves chairs.
