Wind farm developers request 2nd extension of permit in Ford County

KEMPTON – The developers of the Pilot Hill Wind Project are requesting another extension of their special-use permit for the construction of 96 turbines in the Kempton area in northern Ford County.

The Ford County Zoning Board of Appeals has called a meeting for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the Mona Township shed in Kempton to approve the proposed extension of the permit.

This would be the second permit extension granted in Ford County for the project, formerly known as the K4 Wind Farm. In 2011, Ford County extended the permit it initially granted in 2008 for another three years, through Nov. 10, 2014.

Developers had said earlier this summer that construction on the Ford County portion of the project may not be under way by the November deadline.

Ford County Zoning Officer Matt Rock said a two-year permit extension is being requested.

Construction of Phase I, which includes 61 turbines in Kankakee County and 42 in Iroquois County – is expected to start soon.

San Diego-based EDF Renewable Energy announced in July that it secured 96 percent ownership in the first phase of the wind farm from its co-developers – Oakland, Calif.-based Orion Energy Group LLC and Cincinnati, Ohio-based Vision Energy LLC.
