Turbine plan refused

Plans for a wind turbine which received strong opposition from local residents and councillors have been refused planning permission by Cornwall Council.

Polharmon Farm, near Tywardreath, applied to erect a 77-metre windmill, which would have been facilitated by renewable energy company Clean Earth Energy Ltd.

However, in light of nearly 450 letters of objection from local residents, Tywardreath Parish Council, Fowey Town Council and Conservative Parliamentary candidate Steve Double, it was rejected by planners earlier this month.

In the planning officer’s report, it was claimed that the proposed turbine would have “an adverse landscape and visual impact on the historic environment” and that it would “inevitably change the character and appearance of the countryside.”

It also listed nearby buildings that would be affected, such as Lanlivery Parish Church, the historic Castle Dore site and the Fowey Consuls Engine House.

Objectors claimed that tourism could be badly affected, there was a lack of public consultation and that the application had inconsistent information.

However, the officer’s report also stated that if the turbine had been built, it would have provided enough energy for 314 local households and that 328 letters of support had been submitted.

Mr Double told the Cornish Guardian in July that there were already “more than enough” turbines in the county.
