French and Irish wind farms could receive British funding… so long as they export power to the UK

Wind farms in France and Ireland could receive UK Government subsidies under a new scheme so long as they export power to the UK.

Ministers want to offer taxpayer-funded payments to overseas projects to incentivise companies to build low-carbon technologies – such as wind, solar or nuclear – that would otherwise be economically unsustainable.

The plans, which are still in an early stage, could see millions paid out to foreign wind turbine owners.

Any renewable project is able to apply for the subsidy, though Government sources said it was likely to be targeted to attract wind farms based in the Irish Sea.
