Wind farm bid refused by government

A three-and-a-half-year battle over a new windfarm outside Milton Keynes has ended with the government throwing out the plans.

RWE Innology had planned to build five turbines at Orchard Way in Haversham and Little Linford. Each of the turbines would have been 127 metres tall, or roughly the same size as the London Eye. These would have been 650m from local homes.

Although the scheme was originally rejected by the Milton Keynes Development Control Committee 18 months ago, but RWE appealed against the decision.

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has now intervened to make the decision himself, although RWE Innology could still launch a judicial review.

Pam Williams, chairman of the Stop Haversham Wind Farm Action Group, said: “We are delighted that Mr Pickles has recognised that the ancient rural village of Haversham is not a suitable location for a wind farm. In fact it is hard to imagine a less suitable location.

“The village is a peaceful haven for residents of north Milton Keynes and beyond, where walking, riding, bird-watching, fishing and other leisure pursuits are enjoyed.”

Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North, supported the campaign.

He said: “I’m delighted that common sense has prevailed and that the government has delivered on its pledge of not allowing developers to run roughshod over the wishes of local people.”
