Our opinion: This ’n that

Speaking of unhappy people, it’s hard to find anyone in San Bernardino County in favor of the North Peak Wind Project, a proposal to turn over 16.4 square miles of mountain ridges overlooking much of the Victor Valley to gigantic wind turbines and new power lines to transport the electricity they would generate.

Latest to join the anti-wind turbine group are county Supervisors James Ramos and Robert A. Lovingood, who, according to a press release, have sent a joint letter to the Bureau of Land Management “strongly opposing the … project.”

Ramos and Lovingood voiced the same objections Victor Valley residents have been complaining about – harm to property values, views, Native American cultural resources, interference with radar tracking of aircraft and environmental concerns. Their letter includes in those environmental concerns the danger to bald eagles, golden eagles, bats and other birds, the dead bodies of all of which have been found beneath wind turbines in other parts of California, victims of the spinning blades.

As Lovingood said, “This is the wrong location for this project, and I urge the BLM to reject the North Peak Wind Project.”

We were pleased that the letter pointed out that while the project is on federal land, “San Bernardino County retains authority over local roads, including necessary widening of roads for construction crews to access the project site.”
