The Springfield Park District is taking the first steps toward fixing its problematic wind turbine at Southwind Park.

Derek Harms, the district’s executive director, said Monday that companies have been asked to submit proposals to repair and upgrade the turbine that has had ongoing issues and is currently not working.

“The company that manufactured the wind turbine is no longer in business,” Harms said. “There is nobody who is qualified or able to service the unit.”

Companies interested in the work have until Aug. 8 to submit a proposal. After the proposals are reviewed, the park board will decide how to proceed with the repairs.

Harms said that until they receive the proposals, they can’t be sure how much the project might cost.

Park district officials hope to reuse the existing tower that holds the wind turbine and also the existing underground wiring.

The turbine was installed in April 2011. Funds to pay for it included a $50,000 grant and about $100,000 from the park district.
