Enough is enough say wind turbine protestors

Driffield Times & Post | 15 July 2014 | www.driffieldtoday.co.uk

Banners proclaiming slogans such as “Enough is Enough” were waved as more than 100 people marched through Beverley in a bid to stop more wind turbines blighting the picturesque the East Yorkshire countryside.

Protestors from villages in the Driffield and Beverley areas joined forces amid claim that the region has the highest density of wind turbines in the whole of England.

Marchers listened to speeches by wind energy expert Garry Burt, archaeologist Doctor Peter Halkon, UKIP MEP Jane Collins and MP David Davis.

The march started at the Westwood Pasture and finished in Beverley town centre when protestors put their calls for a halt to turbines to the planning department of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

There have been planning applications for a further 63 wind turbines in the county this year alone – and the stance of protestors has won support from some councillors.

Driffield councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding Portfolio Holder for Environment, Housing and Planning, said: The marchers should be clear that East Riding of Yorkshire Council is their ally in this fight and not their enemy. The ERYC shares their wish to see the East Riding landscape and villages safeguarded – it could be said that the proper place to march would be the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol, the Government body which has over-ruled local refusal decisions with alarming regularity.”Coun Fraser said: “The growing and increasing industrialisation of the countryside by the continuing march of these monsters is a concern.

“The ERYC has tried to reflect local opinion in its planning decisions. Many times this has resulted in our planning committees refusing such developments. Past experience sees these refusals taken to appeal by the applicants and, sadly, local refusals have been all too frequently overturned by the Government’s Planning Inspectorate or by previous Secretaries of State. These battles take place at some considerable cost to local council tax payers. So, East Riding of Yorkshire Council stands proud in its efforts to defend and protect our landscape.”
