Opponents of wind farm near Indian Lake voice concerns

LOGAN COUNTY, Ohio – A plan to build wind turbines is blowing up trouble in two local counties. EverPower Wind Holdings is planning to build a wind farm in the Indian Lake area, but some are not blown away by the idea.

Shirley Schroth said she spends about half her time at her home on Indian Lake. She doesn’t want a wind farm disrupting a serene setting. “Who wants to sit on their front porch and look at these?” Schroth asked. “They blink, they make noise.”

She is also concerned about the environment and the value of her home. Signs are posted in yards around the waterfront community. The EverPower company is planning to build between 90 and 176 wind turbines.

Project Manager Jason Dagger said the project has been in the pipeline for years.

“We’ve went through the power siting board that requires us to look at all of those issues and report on the greater project and what impacts it will have,” Dagger said.

Dagger said EverPower is leasing about 180 acres from private land owners in Hardin and Logan counties, he said the turbines won’t be constructed in populated areas.

“They are on farmland, a distance from lakes and homes. This is a very conservatively sited wind farm,” Dagger said.

Shirley Schroth said she is still planning to do what she can to keep the wind turbines from going up.

Since the project has already been approved by the Ohio Power Siting Board, the only way opponents say they could stop the project is by if Logan County commissioners don’t grant a tax exemption for the company.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Logan County senior center in Bellefontaine.
