Three informational public meetings set for the next three Wednesdays will focus on the large-scale wind energy development planned for the downeast coastal region.

The presentations and discussions at the Cobscook Community Learning Center, all at 5:30 p.m., are scheduled for July 16, July 23 and July 30.

Lubec resident Bob Judd is the July 16 speaker. His talk is titled: Large-Scale Wind Energy Development in Downeast Coastal Communities: A Look at Atlantic Wind’s Activities.

Atlantic Wind, an industrial-scale wind power developer, has leased as much as 16 percent of land in Trescott in the last few years with intentions of building wind towers within Washington County’s Bold Coast. Judd’s talk, with maps and graphics, will help area residents understand what has been happening locally and quietly with the land-leasing.

The meetings are being coordinated by members of the Bold Coast Community, a local group of Unorganized Territory residents. They are organizing to respond to the Atlantic Wind renewable energy proposal, and are seeking input from residents of Trescott, Cutler, Whiting, Lubec, Edmunds and beyond.

Discussions will consider questions such as these: How does the proposal serve the community? What is the expected environmental impact on the community? Is the proposal compatible with the unique environmental attributes and experiences that draw people to the Bold Coast? How does the proposal fare with current trends in renewable energy technology? How can renewable technology best serve the Bold Coast?

The speaker for the July 23 meeting is Alan Mishka, discussing citizens’ rights and corporate influences in the UT of Maine. The speaker for the July 30 meeting is Gary Campbell of the Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed.
