Campaigners out in force against plans for wind turbine

Campaigners turned out in force to help boost a fighting fund set up to protest at plans for a giant wind turbine.

Farmer Russell Bowman wants to erect a 250ft turbine – almost as tall as Carlisle’s Dixon’s Chimney – south east of Ainstable.

Already the proposal has whipped up about 900 objections ahead of its expected hearing before Eden Council’s planning committee next week.

More than 150 walkers, cyclists, runners and horse riders turned out for the Walk Against the Turbine on Sunday.

The route taken by the campaigners went past the proposed turbine site on the High Moor road and back to the Heather Glen.

The event, organised by the Ainstable Turbine Action Campaign (ATAC’s), raised more than £500 towards the fighting fund.

ATAC chairman Ted Cole said they weren’t surprised at the community turning out in force.

Mr Bowman, who farms at Castlerigg Farm, Armathwaite, says he would like to work with people so the scheme could bring benefits to the community, such as potentially providing electricity and insists not everyone is opposed to it.
