Bluewater wants Ombudsman look at renewable energy approvals

Bluewater Council wants the provincial Ombudsman to investigate the Renewable Energy Approval Process.

Bluewater is a member of the Multi Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group. That organization says the current Provincial Renewable Energy Approval process is conducted in private, with limited public transparency for the communities affected by the decisions.

The group also suggests that local reviews of provincially approved projects are incomplete, or inaccurate.

The organization claims, despite a promise from the government to locate wind farms in “willing host” communities, projects continue to be approved in many of the 82 communities who have declared themselves unwilling.

The group is also concerned that wind energy companies are now offering substantial financial incentives to communities, even though similar inducements would be considered inappropriate in other planning proposals.
