PSC sets hearings on new lines

The Missouri Public Service Commission scheduled eight public hearings on a proposed high-voltage power line across northern Missouri.

The Grain Belt Express project would carry power generated from wind turbines in Kansas across Missouri and Illinois to a substation in Indiana. The 750-mile project is estimated to cost $2.2 billion.

The Missouri Public Service Commission is considering whether to grant a certificate for the transmission lines to be built and operated. The scheduled hearings arranged by the Public Service Commission are only happening in the counties affected by the transmission line.

The first hearings are set for Aug. 5 in Cameron and St. Joseph. Additional hearings will be held Aug. 12 in Monroe City and Hannibal; Aug. 13 in Marceline and Moberly; and Sept. 4 in Hamilton and Carrolton.

Recently, Missouri Cattlemen Association joined in the campaign opposing the creation of the transmission line. The Missouri Farm Bureau and United for Missouri both also oppose the construction.

Randolph County Commissioners are still supporting the project.

The meeting for Monroe County will be held August 12 at the Knights of Columbia Hall in Monroe City starting at 11 a.m. Randolph County will have their meeting on August 14 at City Hall in Moberly, starting at 6 p.m. Chariton County’s meeting will be in Carrollton at the Rupe Community Center starting at 6 p.m. on September 4. The next closest meeting is in Marceline at the Walsworth Community Center on August 14 at 11 a.m.

The public is invited to attend these meetings.
